Creating the Perfect Bedroom for Your New Child

It’s an exciting time when your child is ready to sleep in their own room.  But getting their bedroom just perfect is a worry, especially if this is your first child.

To help you get the bedroom just right, here is a handy guide to planning the perfect space.

Keeping the room warm

Ideally, you’ll want to be able to keep the room at a constant temperature and free from draughts.  What expenses do you need to plan for when creating a warm and snug bedroom?  It will depend on your property but double or triple glazing, curtains or blinds, carpeting, and floor insulation costs should be considered.

Using calm and soothing colors

What sort of color scheme works well in a young child’s bedroom?  Well, it’s best to leave bold, bright colors until they’re a bit older.  Instead, try using pastel colors to promote a sense of calm such as a baby blue, pale pink or soft yellow.

Their first bed

It’s a landmark moment when your child moves from a crib to their first bed, but there are a few things to consider.  The first is your budget.  There are some amazing children’s beds that are shaped as cars, pirate ships, tractors and princess palaces.  These are great for a few years but will then need replacing.  If you’re thinking of a bunk bed or full-size bed to last a few more years, make sure there’s a safety rail attached so they don’t go bump in the night!

Making your child feel safe

Adapting to sleeping on their own can be difficult for a young child.  Try adding comforting elements to the room, such as night lights, a canopy over the bed, stuffed toys and a sleep clock trainer to help.  Blocking out noise and light from outside can also help.

A playtime rug

Adding a fun non toxic play rug to the bedroom is a lovely idea.  It will add to the cozy feel of the room, soften the floor and create a safe place to play.  Choose one that is machine washable to help keep it clean and dust-free.

Keeping toys off the floor

Your child will find it comforting to have their toys in the room with them, but equally you don’t want them to be a trip hazard on the floor.  A few storage crates will make it easy to throw the toys into before bedtime.
