Written by Carolyn Sloan and illustrated by James Williamson, Welcome to The Symphony is a charming and interactive music book. The story of the 32 paged book is narrated by three little mice who take the readers on a journey that starts off by the musicians showing up. My two kids could hardly wait to turn to the next page so as to meet the mice. This book does not just have a great story to go with it but also the readers get to learn the most important basics of music. My kids especially loved pressing the buttons on each instrument and the sound produced. I believe this is the best way they could ever get introduced to as well as learn about orchestral music instrument. Your kids will get a chance to learn all that there is about the families of instruments ranging from strings, percussion, wood wings and brass. My kids found it so much fun to learn the elements of music from melody to harmony and tempo.

Each and every idea is illustrated in sounds that every child will certainly want to keep repeating and keep repeating. My three year old kept on humming da- da- da- daah. Welcome to The Symphony has a total of nineteen sound buttons allowing young the readers to hear the different voices and parts of music. Readers will find it so much fun to learn what a melody is, what a harmony is and how a clarinet sounds like. My two lovely kids kept matching their voices to the A note that the concert master plays while tuning the orchestra. I believe your kids will without a doubt dance to the full throated passages and definitely sing along.

Carolyn Sloan has used her years of experience as a musical writer to present to young kids an educational and entertaining side of what there is to know about orchestral music. She not only defines but also describes to detail each and every musical term. She literally takes nothing for granted. The definitions are done with great thought and as such can easily be comprehended by children who are being exposed to the great world of music for the very first time.

Do not be surprised to find slightly older kids falling in love with this amazing book as it appeals to so many levels. Welcome to The Symphony will truly bring the real meaning of pleasure of classical music everywhere it goes. The passages bring to light every question a child might have about the experience in the most natural and satisfying way. With insights and passions drawn from this book, my seven year old literally dragged me to the symphony. Your kids will totally love you more for bringing this book home. Welcome to The Symphony!
