Our Unforgettable Summer At ROM

Just a couple of weeks left before summer ends so we better make the most out of it. And we sure did, when we visited the Royal Ontario Museum last weekend!

First off, my personal highlight for our ROM trip was the Chihuly glass exhibit. It’s a grandiose display of glass installations sculpted by world-renowned American glass artist Dale Chihuly, who has had over 200 glass exhibits around the world. I’ve never experienced large-scale glass art in the flesh before, so we made the Chihuly exhibit the first thing to check out at the ROM first. And I’m really glad we did.

Chihuly’s installations at the ROM is themed with nature elements. Some of the magnificent glass sculptures we saw were the Float Boat which were giant colorful planet-like glass balls in a wooden boat, the Laguna Torcello which looked like huge colorful underwater corals and plants, the Persian Trellis which is made of big glass flowers, and the Sapphire Neon Tumbleweeds which glowed beautifully but looked so delicate because it’s thin glass!

But the crowd favorite in this exhibit was the Persian Ceiling. My kids and I loved the idea of lying on beanbags while taking in all the colorful light that flow through the large, colorful glass sculptures from the transparent ceiling. This was the most unforgettable installation for us. It was every photographer/Instagrammer’s dream! And the best thing about the Chihuly exhibit at the ROM is that taking photos is highly encouraged. But the photos are nothing unless you visit the exhibit and see the larger-than-life glass pieces yourself. Chihuly at the ROM is up until January 2, 2017 and I’d love to go back myself, without the kids, so I can stay longer and take it all in.

And the rest of our ROM adventure was all for the excitement of my kids. They enjoyed Chihuly’s exhibit, but because they’re kids, no museum trip is complete without immersive play! There are so many other happenings to check out at the ROM and some of my kids’ favorites were their encounter with the dinosaurs, many different kinds of animals, the Bat Cave, and of course the ROM Kids Boutique.

It was also our first time to experience augmented reality, and that was with the T. Rex Alive! We had a photo opportunity with a living T. Rex (read: not just the bones but the flesh, skin and teeth!). Not only that, it was out with its jaws and teeth to chase us! It’s such a relief that it was just augmented reality.

There are so many events lined up at ROM for this summer and it’s not yet too late to come by. So if you haven’t yet, you better take the kids with you for an awesome summer and they’ll never forget!
