2015 holiday gift guide

As my school age daughter grows older, she’s getting better and better at drawing and making arts and crafts. She’s also becoming keen on being organized with her personal stuff, and I noticed from her possessions that she’s starting to love collecting cute stuff especially stationery and art materials. I remember when I was her age, I used to love those things too! And I’m happy to get her more novelty items but I also make sure that they’re going to be useful.

Since my daughter loves doodling and sketching, I know she’d love to have cute erasers. And I want her to have it in a fun way, by making her own! We both got so excited when we got our Modes4U DIY Eraser Making Kit, particularly the Kutsuwa DIY Eraser Praline Set. It’s a product of Japan, that’s why its packaging is so adorable and the little chocolate erasers look so kawaii!

The set includes:

4 clay mousse colours: white, pink, yellow, brown

2 praline candy mold trays (top and bottom)

1 box for microwaving and water bathing the mold

5 mini cupcake liners for the erasers

1 cutout chocolate box (included in the illustrated Japanese instruction sheet)

There were no instructions in English, but the illustrated steps in Japanese were easy to understand, and we also watched the video instructions on YouTube to be very sure especially on the microwave oven part. All we had to do was spray some water on the molds trays to prevent the clay mousse from sticking, and then put the clay mousse on the mold, press the two mold trays together, and unmold. The mold needs to be submerged in water in the microwaveable box.

The microwave heating of the mold needs supervision by adults, so I gladly did this part for my daughter. Based on the video instructions only one mold at a time can be microwaved, and heating duration can vary from 2 minutes and 10 seconds (for single molds) to 2 minutes and 30 seconds (for layered molds). After heating, remove the hot water from the box and pour cold water to harden the mold.

My daughter and I enjoyed this creative bonding activity so much, it’s almost like we’re making real chocolate pralines! We had fun combining different colours of the mousse clay to come up with a new dough colour. Mixing yellow, pink and brown together made a light peanut butter colour for our mini cookie eraser, while white and pink combined made a light pink colour for our strawberry white chocolate truffle. Layering different molds and colours was fun too, like the brown chocolate square with white chocolate drizzle and almond on top. Too bad, they’re not edible!

What even made these yummy-looking erasers look real are the mini cupcake liners to wrap them, and the mini chocolate box. I almost got my husband fooled when I offered him some pralines. But then he saw my daughter using one of them to erase her pencil writing. And yes, the eraser works! Our DIY eraser making was a success.
