Learn to Tell Time the Artistic Way with a Paper Watch {2016 Back to School Shopping Guide}

With the kids back in school I’m always looking for ways to help them stick to their new routines and schedules. It can be tough getting back in the school groove! A wrist watch is a good way to encourage children to learn their numbers and tell time. At the same time, I’m always on the lookout for new art projects. So when I saw this paper watch I was excited. It does double duty, serving as a regular wrist watch but also as an art project.

You might be thinking “a paper watch won’t last two seconds with my kid.” To be honest, that’s what I thought when I first heard of this! But the watch is made out of a tear-resistant material, and so far has stood up to a fair bit of wear and tear. I’m not sure how it would fare against scissors, but if your child is old enough to care for their belongings they should be able to keep it together. The paper is tough with strong fibers, so it seems pretty durable.

The idea is that you can color in the watch with your own creative designs. It’s a good project for a rainy day! You can use gel pens, paint glitter, regular pens, pencils, or any other crafty bits and pieces you might have on hand. You can even just cover the watch band with stickers if you like. We all know that kids love to wear sparkly things or have something unique that no one else has. This type of DIY accessory lets them create something that expresses their personality. This can be particularly important if your children wear uniforms to school, and don’t have much of a chance to wear something unique.

The Paper Watch at gifts.co.uk would also make a great gift if you have any birthday parties coming up. Although it’s aimed at children or teenagers, I can think of a few artistic adults who would enjoy coloring it in as well! If you get a couple, you can decorate them in different styles to coordinate with your outfits. The price is very reasonable, so it doesn’t hurt to stock up on a few. Art projects like this are always good to sneak into my mom’s bag of tricks to surprise the kids with on rainy days or as a special treat. Knowing that it’s something they’ll be able to get daily use out of makes it even more valuable.

While I would have preferred if the watch was analogue, for little ones trying to learn their numbers the digital format is probably easier to use.  All in all it’s a fun way to encourage kids to learn how to get in the routine of telling time, while allowing them to express their creative sides.
