I’ve seen a lot of surprising benefits for my family whenever we play games together, that’s why we always make sure to set aside at least one family game night every week. There are times when my kids could be too drained from rough play or homework, and when my husband and I feel the same after a tiring day at work. But we can’t take them as excuses from not having quality time as a family. Let me tell you why. 

For our kids, family game night is always looked forward to, not just because they love to play, but because it’s a time to really bond with us parents. This is where they most feel our undivided attention, because we are all involved in the game. And without them knowing, they develop certain skills and learn positive behaviours too. Depending on the challenge of the game, kids can develop their vocabulary, math skills, strategic thinking, problem solving, even imagination and creativity. They easily learn to share as the players take turns, and become patient and good sport when they don’t win.

SWhen we play the Game of Life for example, we become completely new characters with lives and decisions of our own. My daughter learns the value of hard work to earn dollars and reach their achievement in their college life, jobs and careers. She pick ups financial literacy lessons from banking and insurance rules of the game, which I know will help her become money smart and familiar with sound investments. She also understands how life works from earning for a living and having a family, to retirement. I know it’s not exact with reality, but at least she has an idea. 

Family game nights are beneficial to us parents too. Since all players in the game are supposed to be coequals, we get to have a break from our authoritative roles. There’s no seniority, we are all kids in the game! And it gives us a childlike, youthful feeling of enjoyment. Our brains get their well-deserved exercise, because challenge only makes us better. My husband and I love to compete with each other as far as board games are concerned, and it benefits us both. And although I’m guilty of letting my daughter win sometimes, I am more often surprised whenever she outstands us all by her own merits! 

As a family, sometimes we can feel little frustrations with our board game faces on, but we don’t forget to loosen up because it’s just a game after all. Funny outbursts are okay as long as we all follow the rules of the game. Our family game nights are always full of thrilling suspense and laughter, just like when we raced each other on a board and pop-o-matic die roller with Trouble. When my kids become more confident and competitive enough to play, we’d be scheduling a grand board game tournament with special prizes! 

From one happy and satisfied mom to another, I encourage you guys to build up a board game library for your family! It’s awesome for challenging yourselves while killing time, disconnecting from gadget use, and even entertaining guests with friendly competition. Best of all, it provides for a laidback quality time with the family, while it keeps our minds working. I recommend classic Hasbro board games like Scrabble, Monopoly, and Twister.   1. Winter is coming and I would love to have some games to play with my daughter on those days and nights when we don’t want to go out. It’s also so good for teaching her skills like math, taking turns, and good sportsmanship.
