As a new parent, I’m still struggling to master the art of motherhood. On the contrary, I never used to asking guidance from my relatives or friends. Since I found out that I was pregnant, I tried my very best to accumulate knowledge in my own way. Within the span of 8 months, I felt that I am well equipped and ready to face my newborn baby. I have one daughter who is 22 months old and if there’s Parenting 101 for Dummies, I will grab a copy but jokes are half-truth, so be it.

I was so happy to receive a set of Dr. Hippo Series from Hippocratic Press for book review. The Hippocratic Press publishes children’s books on children’s health topics. Each picture book has animal characters that get over common childhood illnesses with the help of a pediatrician, Dr. Hippo, and includes a parent guide, answering questions about children’s health issues.

We got a total of five books plus another 5 parenting ‘guide-lets’ that’s how I called it, technically, booklets. These parent’s guide-lets relate to each story line. Here are the brief overviews of my child’s (medically themed) animal tales.

dr-hippo-moose-150x150First one, “The Moose with Loose Poops” from the title itself, you can tell that there would be some vomiting and diarrhea sequence within the plot. This is all about introducing to a child the cycles and the remedy for gastroenteritis, at the back of each child’s book, you’ll find the ‘Dr. Cowan’s Parent Guide’ that answers those question regarding this types sickness.

dr-hippo-sadie-150x150Next one, “Sadie’s Sore Throat” the story demonstrates that there’s clearly nothing to be scared about letting the doctor check their mouth, as they encourage our child to stick-out their tongue.

dr-hippo-katie-150x150

The third, “Katie Caught a Cold” and it’s about ‘colds’ that produces ‘green-stuffs’. I actually learned a lot from Dr. Cowan’s Parent Guide, she also suggests some helpful medications, pre-cautions as she educates the parents on the symptoms that we should be alarmed.

dr-hippo-peeper-150x150

The fourth one, “Pepper Has a Fever” sympathizes with the common symptoms of fever like chills and aches. This story is well balanced, from the real facts on fever and how can we handle it, perfectly delivered with some sense of humor.

dr-hippo-elelphant-150x150The last, but not the least, “The Little Elephant With a Big Earache” is a bout a baby elephant who wakes up with a terrible earache. It encourages our children to recognize the pain and persuade them to follow the necessary steps for the pain to go away.

I saw that my child appreciates the illustration as she imagines that she is the main character of the story. Now, she is fearless, she understands that pediatricians are out there to make every child feel better. Dr. Cowan’s Parent Guide provides a concise guidance it’s like FAQ when it comes to children’s common illness.

I highly suggest these Dr. Hippo’s Book Series. It will help us prevent serious illness, such as otitis media, dehydration, tonsillitis and more. There are times that I’m having second thoughts when it comes to fist aid. Now, I won’t have to send text messages to my child’s pediatrician every now and then. I can simply refer to Dr. Cowan’s Parent Guide. Visit www.drhippo.com and ease your worries as you train your child to be comfortable and friendly to their pediatricians. The stories are presented with creative compassion. You, your child, and your loved ones would definitely love it.

  1. Love the book Peeper Has a Fever. A great guide what to do when your child has a fever and a great book with a story for your child who is feeling under the weather. Thank you.

  2. I like the Katie Caught a Cold, because it’s the most common sickness and it would be nice to explain to my kid what it’s all about through pictures and a story.

  3. My favorite would be the Katie Caught a Cold because when my 2 yo son has colds it is quite difficult to deal with it as he doesn’t understand what’s going on with him and he gets irritated more than ever, doesn’t want to blow his nose, and so on. And it would be of help to me too, as the Parent Guide offers advices about how to take care of the sick children.

  4. I like Sadie’s Sore Throat because it is hard to explain to kids why they hurt and sore throats can be fairly common.

  5. I like Katie Caught a Cold because that is the one that is mostly likely to happen in our house. It would be easy to help explain why my son feels bad. Thanks for the chance.

  6. “The Moose with Loose Poops” would be a favorite I’M SURE! First, I have a 4 yr old BOY! ENOUGH SAID… But, I’ll just say that he had diarrhea the other day, and was asking me questions about it. I’m sure he’d appreciate a book about it! 🙂
