Books by Rachel Renee Russell Will Get Big Kids Hooded! {#Giveaway}

One of the things I want my kids to acquire for a lifetime is their love for reading. Not just for them to learn and give their brains some exercise through curiosity and imagination, but mostly just for fun! I want them to find reading a pleasurable experience, not a chore. I hope reading becomes second nature to them, like breathing air in order to live. And the best way for me to get them reading is not just to surround them with books, but by being a role model to them, showing them that I love reading too. And now that my school-age daughter just turned eight recently, her interests are ever expanding so her reading must keep up with that.

As my child grows older, her range of books should grow too in order for her reading habits to continue developing. But of course her new books should be appropriate to her age. But when we got a 3-book box set of Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell, I thought hmmm… Maybe this would be an exception. I would have started reading it myself but my daughter already wanted it!

Dork Diaries is a book series about a 14-year old girl named Nikki Maxwell who chronicles her life in middle school through her diary. The box set includes the first three series of Nikki’s story. This series not only features text, but also drawings, doodles and comic strips that make it enticing for very young readers like my 8-year old daughter. Although it’s recommended for kids aged 9 to 14, I couldn’t say no when my girl asked me to have them.

dork diaries

The first is Dork Diaries #1: Tales From a Not-So-Fabulous Life is about Nikki’s first time in a private middle school where she got a scholarship from in exchange for her dad’s extermination services. Here she meets her best friends Chloe and Zoey, gets a crush on a guy named Brandon, and encounters a popular girl named MacKenzie Hollister who doesn’t like her and would always compete with her. In Dork Diaries #2: Tales from a Not-So-Popular Party Girl, Nikki struggles to work things together for her Halloween dance with Brandon, the dance clean-up work with Chloe and Zoey, and the Halloween ballet dance of her sister Brianna, which all happen at the same time. And in Dork Diaries #3: Tales from a Not-So-Talented Pop Star, Nikki forms a band with Violet, Theo, Marcus and Brandon to win the prize on a major talent competition, and pay her tuition fee bill.

I think my daughter relates herself wholesomely well with the characters of Dork Diaries. She loves the kind of friendship Nikki, Chloe and Zoey have. And there are lots of humor in the stories, despite the middle school drama Nikki is confiding in her diary. And it makes me sigh that my daughter is now a big girl indeed. But I’m proud of how long she would sit in one corner, eagerly reading through a novel-ish book. I can tell she’s really hooked! No wonder, Dork Diaries became a bestseller.

Misadventures of Max Crumbly

Misadventures of Max Crumbly

We also got the first book of the Misadventures of Max Crumbly series also by Rachel Renee Russell. Book #1 is called Locker Hero, which is about Max’s troubles in middle school. It also has a lot of nice drawings and comic strip to keep young readers entertained and imaginative with the words they’re reading. Even the text in handwritten style font is fun to read! My daughter’s excited to read this one but at the moment I’m currently ‘borrowing’ it from her.

I’m so glad to have given my daughter a great new start to a more advanced kind of reading with Simon & Schuster books. She’s enjoying every minute, and she really feels like a big girl whenever she reads novel-ish books! And a book series makes it even better because she’ll be wanting to read the following sequel next. She can’t wait to read Dork Diaries #2!
