BMO Eco Smart Mortgage Blog Tour and $50 Rona Gift Card Giveaway

My new condo is closing this August and I am shopping around for a mortgage now. I am so glad that I was chose to participate in this BMO Eco Smart Mortgage blog tour.

Actually I had a very bad experience with the mortgage broker before when I bought our current house, she totally messed up our mortgage until we found out on the closing day. It was my first home purchase and I learned I shouldn’t go with the mortgage broker. BMO has recently introduced the Eco Smart Mortgage to their mortgage products. The Eco Smart Mortgage has a 5 year fixed rate of 3.89%. I will definitely check it up.

Here is how it works:

A homeowner downloads the appropriate checklist (house or condo) from the BMO website. The check-list includes things such as: High-efficiency heating and cooling systems, Solar, tank-less or ENERGY STAR qualified hot water system and ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors and major appliances. If after reviewing the checklist, the homeowner feels their home qualifies; they then contact a BMO branch to talk to a mortgage specialist. BMO will send an appraiser into the home of the consumer to confirm the house qualification.

When I went through the check list for my current house, I think  it only qualifies the “Good Quality Attic Insulation”, which we did last November. But it’s a good list so that we can invest in some energy efficient upgrades to our home and reduce costs over the long term based on it. I hope my new condo qualifies this eco smart mortgage program.

  1. One of the things that I am planning on doing is purchasing a new fridge and disposing of the energy sucker I have now. I recently bought a new freezer to be more energy efficient.

  2. I enrolled in the “peak saver” energy saving program with my utility company. They installed a programmable thermostat and can cycle off my air conditioning during peak demand time in the summer to save energy.

  3. we plan on putting in a on demand watertankless heater(i think that is what it is called) So we are not heating up the water in the tank all the time saving us money

  4. so far – energy star appliances, bamboo flooring, no air conditioning, high efficiency light bulbs, rain barrel, and we purchase bull frog power (renewable energy)
to do – i would love to get a copper heat capture system for our waste water or a tankless hot water heater, replace the weather sealing around our front door, plant some more trees

  10. Mandatory entry: All of our large appliances and most of our light bulbs are energy efficient. Our home was built in 2007 so as a whole it is well insulated, however there does appear to be an issue with draftiness from the garage and front hall closet which we plan to look into.

  12. I switched out all my lightbulbs and wash using cold water. The building I am in needs work, and so I will be leaving in the next couple of months. My potential new place has energy efficient appliances, and new windows already. Once I get settled, I will look at other things that I can do.

  13. Our current furnace is only mid-efficiency (~80% efficient) and it’s on its last legs. We are going to replace it with a high-efficiency furnace at upwards of 98% efficiency.

  14. Well we had an eco-energy assessment to find out what we needed to do to make our home moer energy efficient. Then we replaced all our windows, sealed door frames, blocked off the wood fireplace for drafts (we remove it when in use) bought all new energy efficient appliances, draft-proofed all the lightswitches and plugs and insullated the roof/attic.
