My daughter is heading for Grade 3 this year, and I am excited to see all the new things she is going to learn. I have received a set of books from DK Canada that I feel touch on some important facts that she will cover in her new year.
Turn to Learn Multiplication is a fun book that helps teach children their times tables. There is a wheel on the front cover of the book that little hands can spin and watch as the times tables appear. The book teaches times tables 1 to 12, and each page introduces fun and creative ways for children to memorize them. The book is colorfully illustrated with numbers and shapes, and will make it not only easy but also fun for my daughter to learn her multiplication this year. This book is only available in hardback.
Another clever and informative publication by DK is entitled Help Your Kids With Math, available in paperback and ebook. This is a book that I will be able to keep, read, and reread with my daughter all the way up to Grade 6. It introduces the basics of arithmetic and keeps on through subjects like algebra and geometry explaining math to children on their own level as they grow. It uses pictures and language that will not confuse or frustrate them…or their parents! I am happily looking forward to sitting down with my third grader this year and spending valuable time going through the pages with her as she learns.
It is a known fact that many children (and parents!) absorb more knowledge through visual learning. Here is Ocean: A Visual Encyclopedia. Available in hardback, paperback, and ebook, it is a wealth of learning for youngsters! The pictures are clear and breathtaking. I can imagine my daughter’s eyes growing wide as the pages of this book bring her imagination to the depths of the ocean and back again. She’ll be learning about oceanlife and sea animals that she’s never heard of before. Science has never looked so beautiful!
DK Books carries an entire set of these encyclopedias that I can keep adding to our collection, written especially for young people that cover unlimited subjects from the human body to outer space. Each one is consistently filled with beautiful and educational pictures, and with fun and interesting information that will thrill children again and again.
Merriam-Webster’s Children’s Dictionary, also published by DK Books, and only available in hardback, contains 35,000 words and phrases. This is a revised version of the children’s dictionary, with updated language made to fit with today’s life. New countries, new cities, and new flags have been added to keep up with modern times. New phrases and the definitions of new technology have been added. Children will not be able to put this book down as they begin to learn how to research different animals, planets, sports, and so much more. This is another beautifully illustrated book with a mixture of colors that will catch my daughter’s eye and draw her in as she reads.
After spending time looking over these books, I think I am becoming just as excited about the beginning of the school year as my new third grader is!
