I was really excited to try out this Bug Pod, because, like most moms of toddlers, my daughter’s bath toys were taking over our bathroom. She wanted to wear them everywhere and with everything. Wherever we went, other kids would become fascinated by her shoes, and would come up close to get a better look. Tons of parents asked me where they could get their child a pair. She also liked playing with them. One day she got bored in her car seat and took the shoes off, and happily spent the rest of the car ride making horse noises and galloping them up and down the seat back.
I was glad they made her so happy, but I also liked them because of how high-quality they were. The shoes were very sturdy and made to withstand the test of time. The air holes and built-in socks kept my daughter’s feet cool, which makes a big difference when she’s outside all day in the sun. Also, they were super easy to slip on and off, making it so much easier to get out the door in the morning. I definitely plan on buying her a few more pairs.

Teaching a child to read is an often difficult but always rewarding process. Even harder, however, is instilling reading confidence and more advanced word skills in struggling readers. It’s hard to see your son or daughter struggle with reading and feel defeated, and maybe you feel like you don’t know what to do. Well, finally, there’s an answer: the Hooked on Phonics Master Reader Deluxe Edition.
You probably have already heard of Hooked on Phonics and their incredible success rate at helping kids learn to read. Their signature, research-based process has three steps. First, kids learn a new skill or concept. Second, they get a chance to practice the skill until they’ve got it down. Finally, they have fun with games or books to reinforce their new skills. They use fun, colorful materials that will make your child forget they’re even learning, and their three step system creates confident, happy readers.
Hooked on Phonics doesn’t just apply this knowledge to beginning readers, however. Their Master Reader Deluxe Edition is specifically aimed at children who already know how to read, but need help building reading fluency and confidence. The Master Reader collection is for kids seven and older, who already have basic reading skills. With this system, they learn more advanced phonics skills and how to sound out compound and multisyllabic words, as well as practice reading aloud to help them feel good about their new skills.
How does it work? The Hooked on Phonics Master Reader Deluxe Edition is built with four reading levels, and they learn new skills at each one. The first one, Blue, teaches them how to sound out and break down compound words. Secondly, two and three syllable words are introduced in the Green level. In the third level, Orange, children tackle tricky vowel sounds that frequently trip readers up, as well as vowel teams. Lastly, the Red level moves them all the way up to difficult words like turquoise, as well as four and five syllable words.
The Deluxe Edition comes with everything your child needs to build these skills. The kit comes with four chapter books, four easels and 64 story cards. In addition, there’s an included CD-ROM for each level and a parent’s guide. But your child’s favorite part will be the progress poster and stickers, to track their success and encourage them on their journey to become a better reader.
Although my daughter is hardly ready to start this program, I loved the materials and would recommend it to any parent with a child over seven. The chapter books were educational, yet fun and engaging, as were the story cards. The story cards would be especially great for a child to read to a younger sibling or captive parent audience. And the progress poster was very cool and made it easy for children to see how far they had come.
The Hooked on Phonics systems is known for teaching children how to read, and their Master Reader Deluxe Edition takes it one step further by helping children build the confidence and skills needed to make them better readers. If you have a child who struggles with multisyllabic words, or you just want to give your kid some fun, educational activities during off times at school, the Hooked on Phonics Master Reader Deluxe Edition will please everyone in your family.

Schleich Animal Toys Review And Giveaway Ends 09/04 (US/CAN)
We live in a world of children’s toy figurines. Every fast-food meal has them, they’re on every dollar store’s racks, and sometimes it may feel like your playroom is drowning in a sea of small toys. But before you swear off toy figurines all together, you have to see the amazing action figures and figurines by Schleich.
Schleich was founded in 1935, and has produced figurines that probably shaped your childhood: the Smurfs, Snoopy and the Muppet Show figurines all come from this legendary company. Even more impressive than their characters, though, are their animal figurines, which were added to the company’s lineup in the 1980’s. With a level of detail hardly ever seen in children’s toys, their animal figurines are incredibly true to life, and depict animals from all around the world. If you think you’ve seen all there is to see in children’s animal toys, you need to see Schleich’s toys.
The adorable animals in their Farm Life set will delight any child, and their attention to detail is astounding. The Black-Brown Rabbit’s ears look so real and alert, you’ll almost wonder what they hear. The Nanny Goat and Dwarf Kid look adorable together, just like a real mom and child. The Hen looks over everything with an alert eye. It’ll make you feel like you’re really on a farm.
What my daughter loved even more than the farm animals, however, was the Little Pets collection. The Mouse was very little and adorable. The Frog was vibrant green with realistically webbed feet, and looked ready to pounce. My favorite, the Budgy Green, was a vibrantly colored parakeet. Others in the Little Pets collection include an attentive Guinea Pig and a slothful looking Tortoise. There’s also a spiky yet cute Hedgehog, from their Wild Life collection, that my daughter especially liked.
When these toys arrived at our house, my daughter was pretty excited. She set them all up on a little play farm, and loved making all the animal noises. Her frog croaked, her bird sang, and her goat made some odd braying noises that sort of sounded like a goat (I guess we’ll have to take her to a farm soon). She also liked pretending that the Little Pets animals were her own pets, and even insisted on taking them to bed with her, so they wouldn’t have to sleep alone.
While she thought they were a blast, I was literally blown away by the care and attention to detail exhibited in the Schleich animals. They’re a perfect way for children to learn through open-ended play, without even knowing they’re learning something new. If you have a child three or up, these toys are definitely worth checking out. They’re easily available, at Toys R Us, Target and other specialty retailers, including Chapters for our friends in Canada. They make a great toy for all ages, and they’re a great way to start a collection. I plan on giving my daughter a couple every year for her birthday, so that eventually she’ll have a collection of her own. These toys are such high quality, hopefully she’ll be able to pass them onto her children.
